Here are the most common ropes types and their uses: H.M.P.E. (Dyneema, Spectra, Amsteel) High-modulus polyethylene is super strong and light doesn’t absorb water, has resistance to ultraviolet radiation, and it can float. Used for most running rigging applications. Nylon is used for dock and anchor lines. It is strong and stretchy. Polyester For many years polyester has been the go-to rope for cruising-boat halyards and sheets. It’s cost efficient, strong, and resists ultraviolet radiation.
